Starting Solids

Right around Colin's 6 month birthday we started to introduce solids. We started him with a little avocado and then a few days later he tried oatmeal. I want to make all of Colin's baby food so to make the oatmeal cereal I ground up oats to form a powder. Then I cook the oatmeal powder with water and store it in several small containers. After oatmeal, he tried bananas. Then I made a batch of sweet potatoes, green beans, and prunes. To make the baby food I cooked the food (roasted the sweet potatoes, steamed the green beans, and simmered the prunes), pureed it in the food processor, and then froze it in silicone ice cube trays. Once they were frozen I popped out the cubes and put them in freezer bags. When he eats, I just grab a cube or two, heat them up for a few seconds, and thin it out a bit with water or breast milk. This week I also made carrots, peas, and applesauce. He has liked everything that he's tried, but as far as eating solids goes, some days he's into it and some days he's not. We're just starting slowly and letting him experiment with tastes and textures. He still gets most of his food from breastmilk.

Here's a video of Colin's first time trying avocados:
