At the end of March Colin came down with a high fever one Saturday evening. His fever would go up and down and would get as high as 103.5. He was really lethargic and you could just tell that he didn't feel well. He wasn't better by Monday, so I took him in to the doctor. They checked his ears and tested him for the flu, RSV, and strep and all were negative. He said it could just be teething or a little virus. He called to check each day and since he was still having fever, we went back in on Thursday. They tested his urine and it was fine, so no UTI. The doctor said that it was likely Roseola or some other virus and told us what to look for. He said the fever would break and he would get a rash. Sure enough, on Friday the fever broke and he had the rash on Saturday. He felt so bad all week and was pitiful. He just wanted to cuddle and didn't want to play at all. After the fever broke he was finally back to his crazy self.
We had about 2 weeks of him feeling good and then all of a sudden he got a fever again. This time it wasn't as high (around 100) and he acted like he was feeling fine. This lasted off and on for several days and I once again took him in to the doctor to get checked. When the doctor looked in his mouth, he saw two little red spots in the back of his mouth. It turns out he had Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. Just like the Roseola, it's a virus so there's no medicine or anything to take. He felt fine, but would just run a low-grade fever off and on for almost 2 weeks.
I was feeling discouraged that he had been sick for so long, but the doctor reassured me that both of these viruses were mild and that if those are the only times he's been sick in 10+ months, then he was doing great! I'm hoping he can stay healthy now!
